Collective good and bad.
There are various parameters of labeling something right or wrong, ethical,
or un-ethical and it varies from culture to culture, but there are somethings which
are not right if not at all wrong. Like addictions, dependencies, bad habits of
various kinds etc. take smoking and drinking, these are habits which are harmful
for the people, they have multifold effects on people who are involved in it. They
affect them physically, mentally, economically, socially etc. Almost every
where in the world there is no cap on smoking and drinking, at the same time
there are restrictions on other addictive things but still they are consumed illegally.
Some people come with an argument that it comes under their rights to life.
They are free to do anything at their own cost, if they are harming themselves,
it concerns only them not others. here comes a question that what should be our
stand? Should it be considered a right despite knowing that it harmful for the
person involved.
Whatever be the views or opinions, I think one should speak, raise
questions, consult others, persuade others to abandon such habits, which are
detrimental. Doing so will be an effort towards the collective good. It can bring
positive and progressive changes in the persons involved, their families and
other people in their vicinity. Otherwise, we will keep destroying our lives
and exhausting resources on the name of enjoyment and pleasures, and one day
the same pleasure and enjoyment will become our biggest weakness, which are
called addiction and dependencies and they lead to more anxiety, frustration, and
helplessness.
